Old Stuff Thursday .... and a Hat

Good morning and welcome back to Old Stuff Thursday!

I`ve had this wicker basket for about ...27 years. It originally held a huge plant that resembled a banana tree and stood in the upstairs hallway of our second house. One night, I was awakened by footsteps in the hallway and immediately got up to check on the kids. Well, there was my sleepwalking 6 year old, Joey, peeing in the plant! In his ``walking`` state, he must have thought it was the toilet!

It`s a story we tease him about all the time!

Well the tree died! But since then, it`s held magazines, yarn, shoes and at one point, served as a laundry basket.

Today, it`s Brooklyn`s ``toy box``. I`m sure we`ll find other uses for it in the future.

And now ..... the hat!

I crocheted it last evening in front of the TV. The flower is my version of a forget-me-not, one of my favourite Spring beauties.

The colour combination is ME. I couldn`t help myself!

Good Sunday morning to all my buddies out there!

Well, I finally found a crochet pattern for a tea cozy that is adorable AND functional. I Started working on it last night and finished it this morning.

The instructions were a little confusing but I was determined, so after a few false starts ...

Here it is!

I have seven tea pots and it fits all but one. I may make some modifications and attempt a larger one for my 12 cup tea pot. The possibilities are endless; I may make one for each, all in different colours!!!!

I`m crazy about this little topper!

Bitterly Cold Day!

It`s a sun drenched, bitterly cold day today here in Oakville, Ontario with the temperature
at -14C but feeling like -28C with the windchill. Brrrrr!

It`s difficult to explain the light today, it`s almost blinding, so I tried to capture it on film; still I can`t do it justice.

Old Stuff - A Harvest Table

Welcome back! It`Old Stuff Thursday, the day I talk about a much loved object in my little beach bungalow.

Today I`m featuring my pine harvest table, which I`ve had for over 30 years.

We got it at a furniture store that was going out of business so it cost next to nothing.

There`s a matching sideboard but we don`t have the space for it in this house. It`s sulking in the basement.

I especially love the turned legs.

And the rustic feel of it.

It`s seen homework, colouring books, a few craft projects and many, many delicious meals.

Mizener`s Antiques & Flea Market

Yesterday was my first time at Mizener`s, one of Ontario`s oldest, authentic country flea markets, a few towns over. It was huge and full of beautiful things ... a girl could spend all day there!

I was hunting for pieces to add to my china collection, but no luck. I did find this salt & pepper set though.

I can`t seem to resist roses these days ... in any form!

Old Stuff - A Grandfather Clock

Today I`m going to show you my grandfather clock. I don`t think I`ve ever told you about him. He`s a very handsome guy; a wedding gift from my sister, Fatima, who has since passed away.

He`s very special to me because he`s the closest I`ll ever get to a family heirloom, and his presence is very commanding, just like hers was.

It`s like she`s still here with me.

Well yesterday, on another one of my thrifting adventures, I found a crochet book (99¢) at the Salvation Army. I spent some quality time with my `new` book and we remained very close well into the evening hours. Now I want to try all the gorgeous projects in there; I`m like a kid in a candy store!

Sorry Santa

Santa arrived in Oakville on horse and carriage Thursday, he made the paper; it was all very festive.

All week, in preparation for Brooklyn`s visit, I presented her with pictures of Santa, did the boisterous ho-ho-ho ... daily (which always made her giggle uncontrollably), and crossed my fingers that when she actually met the big man in the red suit, she wouldn`t scream in horror like her mother did at this age.

Well, we tried didn`t we? Maybe next year? I did manage a few photos of her wondering through the display before Santa`s arrivval.

Right as Rain

Life has been a challenge lately. The `slings and arrows` have been coming at me from left and right for quite some time. I struggled, I fought like a champ, I pushed and pushed but life, like an adolescent with behavioural problems, would not co-operate.

So I stopped.

And while nothing has changed externally; the hits just keep on coming, I`m at peace. I know there`s another plan for me, one I haven`t imagined.

It`s been tough, I must say, letting go of my little fantasies, but I know now that`s all they ever were. I`ve stopped chasing rainbows. It feels right.

Desperately Seeking ...

On a not so recent trip to the Salvation Army, I found this little gem:

The stamp on the back says, ``Johnson Bros. Windsor Ware``, England. I`ve found a similar pattern online, but the aqua border is white and the name of the pattern is ``Marquis``. I`ve been all over the www and that`s all I`ve been able to unearth on this lovely little dish.

I need a set of eight. NOW.

If anyone out there in blogland has any information on this mysterious little darling, I`d be forever greatful.

Outside my Window

As the snow flies (it was just starting to come down when I took this picture), I am very happily ensconced in my kitchen, gazing out the window as the sweet smell of baking oatmeal warms me to my toes!

See, the cookie jar is empty; can`t have that! I baked 60 cookies, this is the first batch. It`s a basic oatmeal raisin cookie, so I won`t bore you with a recipe.

I ask you, is there anything better than a huge mug of hot chocolate (I like Ghirardelli) and a freshly baked cookie on a day like this?

I can`t think of one thing.

The Weather and other Good Things

We`ve had an unseasonable warm Fall, but all that`s about to change. There`s a cold front lurking and snow coming within the next 24 hours. The first snow always excites me; I love to sit in the warmth of my little house and watch the flakes as they make their first appearance.

Ben`s ready too; he loves `his` new throw!

And now for some thrifting news ... I found these little treasures yesterday at Value Village:

It was love at first sight when I saw this little embroidered print; such a charmer!

I can`t seem to surround myself with enough roses these days. I also love the shape and proportion of my new vase.

And to add to my tea cup collection, this little orphan (no saucer) beauty. It may be a while before I go back if the weather report is any indication! Staying away won`t be easy, lol!

Forever Young

My niece, Betty was over for supper Saturday night; we always have a great time when we get together. We talked about everything, from menopause to our deteriorating eyesight. We compared symptoms and even exchanged glasses, each gasping at the other`s `blind as a bat` state!

As we talked about juvederm and the joys of going grey, I was struck by the fact that we sounded like teenagers sharing the horrors of acne and cramps.

But how different are we today, really? We`re older now and have the benefit of experience, but deep down, we`re still those buoyant young girls; open to life`s challenges and ready to face whatever comes next. Do you feel the same inside as you did in your youth?

Have I told you that I`m a menopause baby, number eight? I think I may have ...
This means that I have siblings in their eighties! How cool is that?

Growing up, it was nieces and nephews I ventured outside with for tag and hopscotch fun. When my mother was pregnant (with me), so were my 2 sisters, and a sister-in-law - yes, all at the same time. Consequently, I grew up hearing (their kids) calling my mother, avo (the Portuguese word for grandma). Can you imagine that? Mommy being called grandma, lol!

Today, my nieces are my contemporaries, not my sisters. We are just becoming grandmothers while they (my sisters) are becoming great-grandmothers!

We lived in the country for 18 years and loved every minute, then without warning, the day came when I was ready to go. We sold the country house, bought a fixer in a dream location by the lake and have never looked back.

So what, you say? Well, until that day, I had never considered leaving. I thought, and actually told anyone who asked, that the only way I would ever leave my country home would be the day I died! A bit much, I know. But, I meant it, sincerely ... at the time.

I`m so glad we did it. I love my tiny bungalow by the lake; living here is a dream. I left a huge house, with huge grounds in a very sought after area, but my heart is here. Beach Bungalow is my heart, my house, my home.

Bare Face or Made-up?

Are you the type that won`t leave the house without your hair and make-up done to perfection, or is your morning shower all you need to face the world?

I`m a bare face, hair pulled back in a ponytail kind of girl. Give me a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and I`m good to go! I will, however, go the distance for a special occasion. This is what works for me; it makes me happy.

Where do you fit in? Are you somewhere in the middle of the spectrum? Are you happy there or is change in the air? I`d love to hear your thoughts.

The Vestibule

Good morning!

This is the entry to my home; peel & stick tile, not the stuff of dreams.
It`s our next project and one I`m really looking forward to. Right now the idea is to lift this mess up and replace it with a black and white mosaic marble; we`ll see.

One thing I`ve learned in the last 2 years of renovating my little piece of heaven is that plans change and ideas evolve.

Clean up Time!

Well Fall is everywhere here in beautiful Oakville, Ontario! There`s an unmistakable chill in the air and the winter coats have been brought up from the basement.

The patio furniture has been put away, the flower pots emptied and put in storeage, and yesterday Brooklyn and I did some cleaning up!

You have some idea here how big this maple is; look at all those leaves!

I`ve recently fallen in love with bone china tea cups. An aqua/pink combination would really make my day, but no luck so far.

I did find these at The Salvation Army yesterday. They are orphans (no saucer), but I couldn`t resist the shape and pink-ness of them.

Free Rein or Off Limits?

Ben`s been with us since the day we brought him home from the breeder, 3 years ago when he was 12 weeks old. We knew right away that he was the one for us when during his ``interview``, he distinguished himself from the rest of the litter (a brother and sister) by drenching my face in a frenzy of puppy kisses and promptly planting his little blonde behind at Joe`s feet. Believe me when I say, it was true love, right then and there. Oh, and I think he reads my mind as he always seems to know when I`m feeling down and how to fix it.

Ben quickly took over the household and has had free rein ever since, which friends and family sometimes have a hard time understanding. I know it`s not for everyone, but Ben is family. He sleeps with us in our bed, watches TV with us on the couch, and pretty much goes everywhere we go.

How about you? I`m curious; does your best friend have free reign of the house or are there areas that are off limits?

A Colourful Throw

I took up crocheting again. When I say, again, I mean that I enjoyed it when the kids were small and I was a stay at home mom. Then I went back to work and they started school; with so many demands on my time, it was lost. Now I have the time again ...... sort of.

I started with a granny square throw. 60 squares – in various colour combinations and eventually I would end up with a beautiful throw for the living room couch; I can`t survive winter evenings unless I`m swaddled neck to toe in something warm, and the old one is getting kind of tatty. This was my reasoning, so I thought ...

But by the time I got to square no. 36, I lost interest ... and I started a second throw, a wave stitch this time. Slowly memories of my mother chocheting in the evenings in front of the TV began to surface, and I realized I had always wanted one! I remembered I was in high school at the time, and that every night, out came her little bag of scrap yarn and that colourful wave throw. It obviously left an impression on me all those years ago, though I had no idea at the time.

My mother passed away Christmas Eve, 2000 and she`s been on my mind quite a bit lately. Maybe that`s why. Maybe that`s why now.

Well, we did it again! We`ve been planning a built in TV stand/book shelf for a while and finally sold our TV armoire on kijiji. This got things going fast and furious!

Here`s the armoire we sold:

We found an Ikea TV stand we really liked and built around it. Solid wood, resonaly priced!

Living a Dream

As I write this post, Brooklyn is sleeping in the crib her mother and uncle slept in before her. It`s a simple crib, purchased in the 70s by a fresh faced couple with big dreams and very little money. It has no monetary value, I know, but that doesn`t really matter; I`d never part with it. I`ve kept it all these years dreaming it would someday cradle a grandchild and now it does - but not the way I`d imagined it.

You see, the plan was to pass it down to my kids, but, as it turned out, neither one of them wanted it. So I took it down from the rafters in the garage, gave it a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint, and set it up in my office. I bought a mattress, pretty new polka-dot sheets, and a `blankey` with stars on it. I bought soft & squishy bumpers and a striped crib skirt. With each purchase, I hurt a little less.

I let it be known that the crib was available for visiting grandchildren. For a long time, it saw no action. Then my daughter moved from the big city to a house only minutes away, maternity leave ended, and grandma was asked to babysit. And the rest as they say is ...

Brooklyn and I have been keeping each other company for 2 months now. I am having the time of my life, and the crib is happy again.

So you see, dreams do come true, just not always the way you expect.

I thought I`d change it up a bit today and offer you some cool facts. Here we go!

- Salt & pepper shakers can be found in the following forms - believe me, I`ve seen them all:

Animals, vegetables, fruits, pop culture, Christmas, Native American, Amish, houses, people, wood, plastics, chefs, transportation, food, beverage and marine! Phew, that`s a whole lot of shakin`goin`on!!!

- Prices range from $20 to $200 or more, and up to $3000 for something really, really special (Depression glass, etc.)

- Vintage shakers never go out of style.

- There`s a salt & pepper museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee that currently houses 20,000 varieties!!!!!

And now, my collection to date:

The blue and white set in the middle of the second shelf is my newest addition. I found it at Value Village for $2.00! I love that place!!!

DAY 15 - On collecting and today`s shaker

I crave tradition, things handed down from the past, ritual. Stories of childhoods spent with doting grandmas or ``crazy`` aunts who had the time to teach you to bake, crochet or plant and nurture a garden, make me green with envy.

A tad idyllic you say? Maybe so but bear with me, there`s a method to all this maudlin madness. You see, this is why I collect. I collect because I have no china from grandma, no oak dining room table from aunt Milly, no teacups from cousin Josephine. Nothing; not even a picture of grandma ...

I collect so that my kids and grand kids will have these things should they want them. I`m will instill in my granddaughters, my love of gardening, reading and baking, and ...

What to look for when buying shakers:

There are a number of things you should look for when buying shakers, including:

Quality-look for good detail, paint that will not flake off, and heavier ceramics. You will want something that will last.

Appropriate markings-if you are looking for a particular set by a particular manufacturer, carefully check to make sure that all the distinctive characteristics match. Also, look for a manufacturer's label. Some items look like the real thing, but are reproductions. This is not important to all collectors, but worth noting.

Uniqueness-many sets are mass produced, but finding a unique set is truly wonderful. You can find interesting and unique sets anywhere where people sell their old stuff (yard sales, flea markets, etc.). Look for sets that make you smile!

What to watch out for:

There are a number of things that you should be aware of when buying shakers, including:

Chips or cracks: these may be harmless and hidden. Some may make your set less valuable. They may also indicate that the piece has been dropped, and that there are other problems like hairline cracks which may cause the piece to break.

Repaired pieces: some collectors have gotten very good at repairing cracks in such a way that it is difficult to detect. A repair may have the same result as a chip or a crack (loss of value and increase in likelihood of breakage).

Paying too much: this particular pitfall happens most often with auctions. Do your research, and know how much you should pay for the piece. Also, know that not all the values in the price guides are correct. They should only serve as a guide.

Caring for your shakers:

Keeping your shakers in good condition ensures that you will have them to enjoy for many years to come.

Prevent breakage: Keep small children from handling delicate pieces. Be sure to store your shakers in a place that is inaccessible to your furry family members, as well.

Dusting: If you don`t want to dust your shakers often, store them where they will be protected. If you like your shakers out in the open, you will need to dust them regularly. It may be a good idea to invest in an electrostatic cloth.

Cataloging: Many collectors (especially those of us who are obsessive compulsive) find it helpful to keep a record of their shakers. My collection is too small to date. But maybe someday ...

Terminology:

*This is by no means a complete list.

Anthropomorphic: These are shakers that are not in human shapes, but have human faces. One of the more popular examples of anthro. are fruit with faces.

Go togethers (or Go withs): These are shakers that go together. They are not identical, but share a common theme. One example is a that contains a cowboy hat and boot.

Hangers: These are sets that have a base. The shakers hang off of the base. One example is the bellhop set. The bellhop is the base, and the suitcases that hang from his hands are the shakers.

Kissers: These are shakers that appear to be kissing.

Nesters: These are shakers where one shaker fits into an indentation in the other.

Stackers: These are shakers where one shaker fits on top of the other.

Tallboys (or longboys): These are very long (or tall shakers depending on how you look at them). They have the salt at one end and the pepper at the other. Many are in the shape of animals.

And finally, did you know that ...

- The salt shaker is usually displayed on the right and the pepper shaker on the left.

- Many people believe that the salt shaker is the shaker with more holes or larger holes.

- Salinopeperophilia - is what you suffer from if you love salt and pepper shakers!!

DAY 7 - Another Find

I just found this set this morning at Value Village! It`s the most I`ve spend to date; a pricey 5.99! I felt it was worth it thought, and the pretty, satin lined box it came in, closed the deal!

It all started with a spice shelf Mr. BB installed for me just above the stove. The plan was that I would have all my spices at hand; very practical, no? Well being who I am, it wasn`t long before the temptation to display something pretty got the best of me ... and so began my salt & pepper collection/obsession.

This is my first set, purchased at Goodwill for a whopping 99 cents.

The word NIPPON is printed on the bottom in baby blue

Notice the gold detailing on one shaker only; I suppose that would be the pepper?

This afternoon while picking cherry tomatoes in the kitchen garden (and snacking on a few; delicious and warm from the sun), I couldn`t help but cut myself a bouquet of the last of the roses. I usually leave them to enjoy outdoors but these were too tempting.

This`n That and Having the Time of my Life

I`ve been babysitting Brooklyn for about 2 weeks now and it`s been wonderful; all my worries were for nothing.

I may, however, consider installing safety latches in the kitchen. She`s a very busy little girl!

I`ve harvested my first EVER crop of potatoes; they were delicious!

And the apple tree in the back garden is heavy with fruit. I`m thinking Apple Crisp ...

Guest Room Reveal

Do you remember this and this?

Well the room is done and has already welcomed the first of my guests with rave reviews. So I thought it was about time to share the results with you!

Here we go!

The room looked like this when we started; tiny, tiny - no floor space for even the smallest dresser.

So we took the Ikea dresser, gave it a fresh coat of Cloud White paint, added some pretty pulls, and tucked it into the wall ...

And now the room looks like this:

We`re pretty happy with how it looks!

Orange Oatmeal Bread/Muffins

Sorry for not posting this earlier; it`s a mad house around here. I`ll explain another time!

Orange Oatmeal Bread/Muffins

1 orange
2 tablespoons plus 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup rolled oats
2 eggs
2 tablespoons softened or melted butter
2/3 cup warm water (105-115 degrees)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Grate the orange rind into a bowl. Cut out as much of the meat of the orange as you can and add it to the bowl. Also squeeze as much juice out of the orange as you can and add it into the bowl. Sprinkle the orange with the 2 tablespoons of sugar and set aside.

In a large bowl combine flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Stir in the oats.

In a separate bowl, combine eggs, butter, warm water, and orange mixture. Blend the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients.

Pour the batter into a muffin tin/greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 for approximately 60 minutes for loaf, or 20 minutes for the muffins!
